Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module students will:

  1. identify and define the primary components of the activity legitimacy theory;
  2. articulate theoretical positions that have influenced classical and contemporary views of disability;
  3. analyze how categorization of typical and atypical human activity, appearance and experience is generated and dynamic;
  4. identify the relevant explanations for atypical activity;
  5. examine the role of values in judging and defining the disability legitimacy of explanations;
  6. describe how disability is differentially ascribed across professions and systems.
  7. correlate the influence of values with service responses by the long-term care system.
