New Materials Available from Center Library

There are new resources which might be of interest available in the Center's library. They are:

Out of Silence: A Journey into Language by Russell Martin (1994, Henry Holt & Co., New York) is a book written about one family's journey to understand their son's autism and to assist him in developing meaningful communication. Jan Koppenhofer reports that this is an outstanding book that poignantly and accurately reflects the issues that face families.

The August, 1994 issue of Mental Retardation contains an exchange of opinion on facilitated communication. The joumal's editor invited four responses to Levin, Shane and Wharton's article What if .. : A Plea to Professionals to Consider the Risk-Benefit Ratio of Facilitated Communication (1994). The respondents (Dianne Ferguson and Rob Homer, David Goode, James Halle, and Wade Hitzing) were "individuals who are fair and open-minded and have not staked out an advocacy position ... or stepped into the public fray .... The respondents contributed thoughtful opinions on the FC controversy" (p. 299).

Anyone wanting to borrow materials from the Center library may call Jen Rice at 581-1084.
