Welcome to FACTS!FACTS (Fostering Achievement, Creating Community, Together for all our Students) is the web-based newsletter of LEARNS and LEARNS Early Childhood Project, a partnership between the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies and the Maine Department of Education. This issue of FACTS provides a warm up for the Center's June 30th conference, Developmental Approaches for Young Children on the Autism Spectrum. We have a strong focus this spring on articles and resources related to children on the autism spectrum, a topic of growing importance in Maine and nationally. We have also included an article for helping to fine tune those local assessments, and a book review on adolescents and the teenage brain. I am providing, as well, a link to an article I recently read, in the April 18, 2005, issue of ADVANCE, Literacy Instruction for Children with Autism, by Liz Lanter, MS, CCC-SLP. Lanter describes how literacy instruction enhances verbal skills for some students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the importance of including these children in naturalistic and literacy-rich environments. You can access and enjoy this entire article by clicking on the title above. As liaisons between The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies and public school and early care and education settings throughout Maine, we hope you will find that FACTS provides you with meaningful information and web link resources. We invite your questions, suggestions for future topics and feedback. Hope to see you at the conference! You can contact us at ccidsmail@umit.maine.edu. You can read past issues of FACTS at: http://www.ccids.umaine.edu/resources/facts/ The LEARNS School Age and LEARNS Early Childhood staff are available to provide information and resources, consultation, professional development, administrative planning for and in support of quality inclusive educational practices in schools and early care and education settings throughout Maine. LEARNS and LEARNS Early are funded through a partnership agreement between the University of Maine and the Maine Department of Education.
