Alternate Assessment Component of the MEA

By Betsy Enright

Federal and state legislation requires that all students be included in state and district wide assessments. For those students who are unable to take the Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) through standard administration, or through approved accommodations, an alternate assessment must be provided. Maine’s Personalized Alternate Assessment Portfolio (PAAP), the alternate assessment for the MEA, must be fully implemented in the next two years.

A series of four professional development sessions is being held in five different regions in the state, designed to support educators as they develop and implement alternate assessments as part of the comprehensive assessments system.
