Grant to Increase Access to Volunteer Opportunities

The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (CCIDS) has received a $15,000 National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) grant to create the Access Community Volunteers (ACV) project; a program designed to increase participation in community service projects by individuals with developmental disabilities.

In partnership with the Maine Commission for Community Service (MCCS) and Maine’s AmeriCorps programs, the ACV will create mechanisms to increase the involvement of people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of national service and will specifically support the technical assistance necessary to identify, match, and coordinate supports for individuals with developmental disabilities becoming National Service Corps volunteers or members.

“The ACV project will bridge the gap between the potential volunteers and the programs that wish to engage them,” according to the grant application, and will make use of the Volunteer Maine Partnership, a free, statewide database linking local agencies seeking volunteers with people interested in volunteering.
The 12-month grant began November 1 and will conclude October 31, 2006.
