Why Learning Results
- As a state, Maine has an abiding interest in and
responsibility for developing and adopting public policy that
"will enable today's students to gain the knowledge and skills
necessary to be effective parents, citizens, workers, and
adults."
- Rapid societal change has ushered in a more sophisticated
workplace and a call for higher levels of learning.
- Our public is demanding that we strengthen the integrity of a
K-12 education; employing multiple assessment practices to measure
progress toward the achievement of standards while communicating
more effectively with students and parents about academic
achievement is a positive response.
- We need to raise the aspirations of our youth by arming them
with a new literacy, one which allows all students access to a
wide array of choices beyond high school including post-secondary
study.
- We need to facilitate Maine's quest for a viable, sustainable
economy by insuring a highly educated citizenry.
- The Learning Results initiative provides a needed focus for
education reform -it defines the "ends" of learning while offering
academic freedom regarding the "means" and the "how" of learning
and teaching.
