Director's Corner
Welcome to the first edition of Centerpoint, the newsletter of the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, Maine's University Affiliated Program. This issue provides an overview of the Center, who we are and what we are doing throughout Maine. Many of you know us through our outreach education and technical assistance projects, others through our research activities, and some through our University of Maine program in Interdisciplinary Disability Studies. As I have met with different groups throughout the state, what has become clear is that many people are still unaware of all of what the Center does.
In future issues of Centerpoint, I will use the Director's Corner to share information regarding state and national issues that have direct implications for Maine's citizens with disabilities. In this issue, I'd like to share the concept of the name Centerpoint, and why we have chosen it as the name of our newsletter. We see the name as representing our desire to be "centered" or balanced in our work; our intention to communicate with you regarding the "point" or purpose of our work; our commitment to address core issues and challenges in the lives of people with disabilities and their families throughout Maine and the nation; and, our role as a hub or "centerpoint" for bringing together the resources of the community and the University. We will work hard to live up to our name.
I hope that this issue of Centerpoint gives you an opportunity to get to know us better. We look forward to using future issues of Centerpoint as a forum for discussion and information sharing relevant to the lives of individuals with disabilities.
Sincerely,
Lu Zeph
