Tobacco Access Portal Project
Stephen Gilson, Elizabeth DePoy, and BJ Kitchin at the University of Maine
Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies have been awarded a grant
from the American Legacy Foundation for a two-year initiative entitled the
Tobacco Access Portal Project. In collaboration with Trefoil Corporation of
Orono, Maine, and the Bangor Literacy Center, this project involves the
development, evaluation, and dissemination of a web portal that translates
existing tobacco prevention, cessation and control websites into low literacy
and accessible formats.

Tobacco Access Portal Dismantles Literacy Barriers to
Tobacco Information
The Tobacco Access Portal project has been profiled as one of five case
studies in the American Legacy Foundation publication,
Tobacco Control in Rural America
.
The case studies were selected as "examples of promising strategies implemented
by some [American Legacy Foundation] grantees to demonstrate how organizations
are addressing the issue of tobacco use in rural communities across America."
