Literacy By
Design
~ A Completed Project ~
This three–year project, a
collaboration between CAST and the University of Maine Center for
Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, investigated the potential
of supporting the literacy development of early elementary students with
significant cognitive disabilities through the use of research-based
instructional approaches. These approaches included the five core
components of quality of literacy instruction recommended by the
National Reading Panel Report (NRP) (2000): phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategy instruction.
The purpose of the study was to
investigate the effects of a universally designed approach to literacy
on the reading achievement and access to the general curriculum for
students with significant cognitive disabilities. This work moves us
toward improving instruction, and raising expectations and
accountability so that students with significant cognitive disabilities
can master literacy.
