Resources for Blind and Visually Impaired

“Improving Educational Services for Students with Visual Impairment: What Every Stakeholder Needs to Know” Conference, May 23, 2006. Hosted by Maine Department of Education, in collaboration with the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, Maine’s Division of the Blind and Visually Impaired, The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, MASDEC and the Maine Support Network.

This workshop was designed to assist administrators with the knowledge and skills necessary to address relevant issues and develop strategies for ensuring a comprehensive educational service delivery system for all students who are visually impaired. Sessions included federal and state policies as they apply to students with visual impairments, a review of program options and decisions regarding appropriate placements, best practices in educational service delivery, resource materials, along with other timely topics.

The Maine Department of Labor (DOL) provides services to people with disabilities who are determined to be eligible through the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (BRS). BRS is responsible for helping people with disabilities achieve independent living and employment. BRS also helps employers learn how to accommodate employees and customers with disabilities. BRS’ mission is to bring about full access to employment, independence and community integration for people with disabilities.

The Carroll Center for the Blind serves the needs of blink and visually-impaired persons by providing rehabilitation, skills training, and educational opportunities to achieve independence, self-sufficiency, and self-fulfillment and by educating the public regarding the potential of persons who are blind and visually-impaired.

Education Services for Blind and Visually Impaired Children is a statewide service of Catholic Charities Maine providing assessment, instruction and consultation to blind and visually impaired children, their parents and school personnel.

Council of Schools for the Blind - http://www.cosb1.org/ 

A consortium of specialized schools in Canada and the United States whose major goal is improving the quality of services to children who are blind and visually impaired.

Division of Blind and Visually Impaired - http://www.maine.gov/rehab/dbvi/dbvi_pgms.htm 

Comprehensive services for visually impaired and blind individuals of all ages. If you have a vision problem that prevents you from carrying out the activities of daily living, getting an education or a job, there is help. The Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired can provide many services to persons with severe visual impairments.

The mission of this innovative program is to improve the quality of life for children worldwide who are deafblind or blind with multiple disabilities. The program aims to improve the lives of these youth and their families through increased educational opportunities.

The New England Center DeafBlind Project has created a list of web sites that contain information and resources about deafblindness, conditions related to deafblindness, and education.

NIMAS Development & Technical Assistance Centers (CAST) - http://nimas.cast.org /

The NIMAS guides the production and electronic distribution of digital versions of textbooks and other instructional materials so they can be more easily converted to accessible formats, including braille and text-to-speech.
