Graduate Study in Early Intervention

How Do I Apply for Funding Through the TOP Grant?

Suggestion: Please print and complete these checklists, and keep them for your own personal use.

Check here when completed: Checklist items:

The application process should be completed in the following order:

  1. Complete the Application for the Graduate Specialization in Early Intervention and the Financial Support Agreement. Send both forms, along with unofficial transcripts, to the address provided on those forms.
  2. Once you have spoken with the TOP coordinator, you will be advised of the next steps in the application process.
  3. Do not apply for non-degree student status or to the Graduate School before speaking with the TOP coordinator.
  4. Register for a course only after being accepted for funding through the TOP grant.

Applying for funding through the TOP Grant

Print the Application for the Graduate Specialization in Early Intervention, complete and send to CCIDS. Also, send copies of transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate coursework, along with the application. These can be unofficial copies. [When applying for admission to the Graduate School (see below) you will need to submit official transcripts].

Print and sign the Financial Support Agreement and send to CCIDS.

Once you have received confirmation that your application for TOP funding has been approved, proceed with the remaining steps.

Do not sign up for any SEI courses unless you have spoken with the coordinator of the TOP grant!

Applying for non-degree student status

If you would like to begin taking courses in the next month or so, follow these steps:

Download the Application for Graduate Non-degree Status by scrolling down the University of Maine Graduate School website to find links to the applications. You may also contact the Graduate School by phone at 207/581-3219 or e-mail: graduate@maine.maine.edu and request the application.

If you are taking courses so you can apply for the States endorsement, Teacher of Young Children with Disabilities, Birth to School-Age 5, and do not wish to complete a masters degree, you do not need to apply to graduate school. Non-degree student status is sufficient, and you should skip the following “Applying to Graduate School” step.

Applying to Graduate School

Visit the University of Maine Graduate School website and click on "apply online". You do not need to be accepted into Graduate School to begin taking courses. Non-degree student status is all that is required.

You will need to apply to the Graduate School if you wish to complete a masters degree, Certificate of Advanced Study, or a doctorate.

Students must be accepted into graduate school prior to the completion of the first 12 credits of graduate coursework (including any credits which have been transferred) toward the degree or by the third registration, whichever comes first.

Registering for an Early Intervention course

See what courses are offered during the semester you are registering, taking note of the deadlines and proposed ATM locations.

Complete the course registration form (select from the two formats below) and send it to the Graduate School. Directions for completing the form are provided, along with the form.

Note: If you have non-degree status, your advisors signature is not required on the registration form.

Contact Becky Libby at 581-2444 or Becky.Libby@umit.maine.edu to obtain a Graduate School catalog. Let her know if you want information about the MAT and/or GRE.

Printing note: If a page prints off the paper, go to your browsers File menu, select Page Setup, then select “Landscape” for a different printing view.
