Summary
In partnership with the College of Education and Human Development, graduate study in
early intervention is offered to prepare practicing professionals to provide high quality
community services for infants and young children with disabilities, including those with
low incidence disabilities, and their families. A Northern and a Southern cohort of
approximately 15 students each are enrolled in Master's degree or Certificate of Advanced
Study Coursework will be offered through a combination of evening and Saturday courses,
interactive video, and intensive summer institutes. On-site and on-line supervision will
be provided throughout the program. Offerings will be designed to meet requirements of the
new Maine State Endorsement in Early Intervention. A total of 30 stipends of up to $2,000
are available to students. The program will be competency-based and focus on leadership
development. Students will develop competencies in (a) interdisciplinary approaches, (b)
family-centered practices, (c) developmentally appropriate and inclusive practices, (d)
collaborative problem-solving, action research, (e) coordination of interagency services,
(f) administration and supervision in learning organizations, and (g) disability law and
policy.

PRODUCTS
|
- Early Intervention and Related Services personnel in Maine will have access to
graduate-level coursework in Early Intervention that includes Early Intervention for
infants and young children with low incidence disabilities.
- Thirty professionals providing Early Intervention services in rural Maine will complete
a Master's degree or a Certificate of Advanced Study in Early Intervention
- An on-line Northern New England Rural Early Intervention World Wide Web site will be in
operation
- The graduate program in Early Intervention will be institutionalized into the higher
education system of the State of Maine

- Program model for delivering graduate education in Early Intervention in a rural state
- Distance Education Course Materials
- Journal articles and conference presentations

Project Activities
Interdisciplinary Education
- Recruitment of students representing related service fields, as well as early childhood
special educators
- Participation of an interdisciplinary core faculty in the development and delivery of
coursework in Early Intervention
- Faculty Development Institute on infusing Early Intervention content into relevant
undergraduate and graduate courses and other CSPD initiatives
Community Service
- Distance Education courses for practicing professionals
- Student projects addressing problems or issues in the field of Early Intervention
- On-line Early Intervention networking system available to professionals, administrators,
families, and community members
Dissemination
- Journal articles and presentations at regional and national conferences on the program
model and evaluation of the model
- Dissemination of Faculty Institute materials
- Presentations and articles by students on projects addressing problems or issues in
Early Intervention
Research/Evaluation
- Evaluation of student attainment of competencies
- Follow-up of program graduates
IMPACT
This project will improve access to, and the quality of, training in the field of Early
Intervention in Maine.
