| As
the father of a child with special needs, I have been asked to write a short
essay regarding my son’s experiences within the educational system
in my community. What follows are some reflections on his progress. Dan has progressed through two years of high school so far with one year at a larger school and his current year at a smaller school. Both schools have special education programs but their emphasis on his educational process is quite different. Each school has as their goal, transition through school toward a job in the community at the end of his formal training. One school places the students into job training for several hours, three days a week, starting in the first year of school, and the other placed him into an accelerated program starting in the third year. Dan’s own most recent aspiration is to become a party planner. He has at one time wanted to be a fireman and to do several other things. He now plans to go to EMCC for post-high school training. Unfortunately, other than the PET (Pupil Evaluation Team) progress reports, I have to admit that I don’t know much about the DREAM/S.N.O.W./Action Plan programs. My wife attends the PET sessions because she is able to go. Because of my work schedule, I am unable to go. The biggest problems I have seen with Dan’s training is that more time seems to be spent on work experiences than his math, reading, social sciences, and other educational experiences. More has been done to that end in this school year than has been done in the past. Dan has participated in youth leadership experiences in scouts and through these opportunities he has gained a good deal of self-confidence and maturity. |
