Modular Long Term
Care Education:
Training Allied Health Personnel in
Rural Disability Practice
~ A completed project ~
Modular Long Term Care Education: Training
Allied Health Personnel in Rural Disability Practice is a collaboration with
rural schools of allied health and middle and high schools in the state of Maine, proposes
to implement, test, and nationally disseminate an expanded and innovative continuation of
our current project. We are in the final stages of testing and institutionalizing our
web-based graduate certificate program in rural Long Term Care. Due to the critical and
continuing need for engaging and educating providers in long term care, particularly in
underserved rural environments, and based on lessons learned from our experience and
empirical understandings of educational need, we are proposing to expand our current
project through the addition of three components:
- Preservice education-aimed at the preparation of
educational modules to be integrated into existing allied health curricula on long term
care policy, research and practice, cultural competency in long term care practice, long
term care leadership, information related to long terms care, and ethics in the
distribution and provision of long term care in our current culture.
- Continuing education on-line modular education designed
to provide targeted, clearly bounded topical education on diverse aspects of long term
care with a focus on cultural competency and leadership in rural long term care practice.
- Interactive virtual modules about careers in long term
care to be implemented in middle and high schools. Particular emphasis will be placed on
inclusive recruitment, including youth from disadvantaged populations such as those from
ethnic minorities and those with disabilities.
