(May 4, 2009) Three University of Maine
graduate students were recognized for successfully completing their
master's degree work within the
Graduate Specialization in Early Intervention, an interdisciplinary
graduate personnel preparation program sponsored by the University of
Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (CCIDS), the
College of Education and Human Development (COEHD), and the Maine
Department of Education. The program, Training Opportunities for
Personnel (TOP): Birth – 5, emphasizes developmentally appropriate and
evidence-based practices and is designed to address Maine’s critical
need for highly qualified Early Childhood Special Educators who are
fully credentialed to serve young children with disabilities, ages birth
to five, and their families.
The students
presented their graduate
projects which are a requirement for completion of the M.Ed. degree. The presentations included a website providing resources on
education and related services in southern Maine for children, aged
birth to five, with autism spectrum disorders; and an online newsgroup
providing evidence-based resources on developmentally appropriate
practice for Pre-K staff and administrators in Androscoggin County.
Training Opportunities for Personnel (TOP): Birth – 5, is a four-year
project funded through the U.S. Department of Education, Office of
Special Education Programs; the University of Maine College of Education
and Human Development; and the Maine Department of Education.
